The Sound That Got Away
An arcane pursuit Fast Encounter for a bell foundry, temple workshop, or any building crowded with suspended metalwork, where a runaway magical sound must be intercepted before it returns to its source.

The Situation
A bell rings somewhere inside a foundry. Then another. Then a third, deeper than the others.
Nobody is touching them.
A visible tremor, like a silver ripple suspended in the air, leaps from one bronze bell to the next. Each instrument sounds once as the ripple passes through it.
Bellfounder Orven Dask is scrambling along an overhead maintenance gallery, shouting for the characters to stop the moving sound. At the far end of the workshop hangs an enormous, visibly cracked bell above the open loading doors.
“If it reaches that one,” Orven yells, “the whole thing comes down!”
The ripple has already crossed two of the six bells between the workbench and the great bell. It continues toward its destination, ignoring obstacles that would stop a physical creature.
What’s Really Happening
Orven once captured the great bell’s first toll inside an enchanted glass vessel, preserving its original resonance for future tuning. The bell subsequently developed a serious crack and was taken out of service.
Minutes ago, Orven accidentally shattered the vessel. Its imprisoned sound escaped and is now seeking the bronze that originally produced it.
The magical echo can move freely through the air, but it is drawn toward resonating metal. Entering another bell briefly holds it while that bell vibrates, giving pursuers a chance to intervene.
Orven knows that the great bell’s damaged mounting cannot withstand another full resonance. If the echo returns, the bell will break loose.
Pressure
The echo advances roughly one bell every minute, accompanied by increasingly powerful vibrations. Hanging chains shake, tools rattle across workbenches, and the gallery begins to sway.
When it reaches the great bell, a deafening toll fractures the supporting brackets. Several tons of bronze crash through the loading platform and into the alley outside.
Orven can identify the next likely bell by listening to the changing pitch, but he cannot reach the fleeing echo alone.
Complication
Silencing every bell in advance makes the pursuit harder.
The intermediate bells act as temporary resting places for the echo. Without their resonance to attract and delay it, the sound travels directly toward its original source.
The characters can witness this when Orven hurriedly stuffs cloth into one bell’s mouth. The ripple bypasses it entirely and accelerates toward the next.
To capture the echo, they must exploit the very vibrations that are drawing it toward disaster.
Possible Resolutions
Trap it inside a bell. Characters can follow the moving ripple along the gallery and reach an intermediate bell while it resonates. Quickly wrapping its rim, immobilizing its clapper, or otherwise damping its vibrations while the echo is inside causes the imprisoned sound to dissipate. Timing matters: muffling the bell too early simply removes another obstacle.
Lure it off course. Heavy metal vessels, spare bells, and hanging counterweights provide alternative sources of resonance. By striking a suitably deep-toned object, the characters can draw the echo away from its current path. Repeated, carefully timed strikes can bring it within reach of a prepared trap, although each attempt sacrifices precious time.
Interfere with its magic. Dispel Magic can unravel the escaping enchantment. A Silence spell placed directly over the echo also destroys its ability to maintain itself through resonance. Used carelessly ahead of the moving sound, however, the same spell removes the bells that would otherwise delay its progress.
Prepare for the final toll. If interception proves impossible, the characters can abandon the chase and secure the great bell with chains, braces, or magic while evacuating the loading area. The returning echo still produces a violent impact, but sufficiently reinforced supports may prevent the collapse. Even if the bell falls, clearing the alley can avert casualties.
