The Cage Above Black Water D&D 5e mine rescue encounter

The Cage Above Black Water

A disaster-rescue Fast Encounter for a mine, quarry, dwarven works, or any settlement built over deep excavations.

Frame: Rescue

The Situation

A hoist cage packed with six miners hangs halfway down a vertical shaft while black floodwater surges upward beneath them. The main winch has locked. The emergency brake holds, but the cable jerks with every shudder below.

At the shaft mouth, foreman Deren Voss is trying to restart the counterweight system. He can raise the trapped cage by lowering a loaded ore cage on the parallel track.

A second miner, Mara Fen, is stranded on a shattered maintenance ledge directly beneath that cage. One leg is pinned under a timber. If the ore cage descends, it will crush her.

The trapped miners are shouting for the winch to move. Mara is too far below them to be seen.

What’s Really Happening

A buried spring burst through a lower gallery after a support wall failed. Water is filling the shaft from beneath, so closing the upper works will do nothing.

Debris struck the passenger cage’s guide rail. Its emergency brake caught before it fell, but the jolt twisted the winch assembly. The counterweight system can still operate if released manually.

Deren knows exactly what lowering the ore cage will do to Mara. He has delayed because he cannot bring himself to trade one worker for six.

Pressure

The water is already splashing the bottom of the hanging cage. As the lower galleries fill, trapped air forces sudden surges up the shaft.

If nobody acts, the cage begins to flood. The miners will scramble onto its roof and onto each other, making extraction harder. Once the cage submerges, anyone still inside has only the air trapped near its ceiling.

Deren will eventually release the counterweight unless the characters stop him or offer another workable plan.

Complication

Mara cannot simply crawl clear. The fallen timber has trapped her leg and also holds part of the ledge together. Lifting it carelessly may drop her into the shaft.

The fastest mechanical solution is therefore lethal to one of the people who needs rescuing.

Possible Resolutions

Reach Mara first. Characters can descend by rope, climb the guide frame, fly, or use magic to reach the ledge. They must stabilize her position before shifting or breaking the timber. Once Mara is clear, Deren can lower the ore cage and raise the miners.

Extract the miners directly. The cage has a roof hatch. Secured ropes, climbing gear, flight, teleportation, or improvised hauling can bring people up one at a time. This avoids moving the counterweight, but the rising water and frightened miners make order and speed matter.

Re-rig the lift. Spare chain, timbers, the winch, and the loaded ore cage can be used to create a new pull that raises the passenger cage without sending the counterweight through Mara’s position. The hoist may be ruined in the process.

Release the counterweight. The six miners rise quickly, but Mara dies beneath the descending ore cage. The immediate rescue succeeds, and everyone present knows what it cost.
