The Hook
For years, the kobolds serving an ancient dragon have quietly turned part of its hoard into working capital. A sleeping dragon does nothing with gold, they reasoned, while merchants and nobles will pay interest for access to it. The scheme began with a few coins and grew into a discreet lending network whose profits were always returned to the cavern. By the time anyone thought to question the arrangement, the hoard was larger than before.
The problem is timing. The dragon wakes six months early and asks for a jeweled crown it remembers perfectly. The kobolds loaned it out as collateral, and it is now three kingdoms away in the hands of a borrower who believes possession guarantees leverage over the bank. Every delay increases the chance that the dragon will inspect the rest of its treasure.
Worse, rumors of the awakening have already reached the kobolds’ clients. Borrowers are rushing to repay, withdraw collateral, renegotiate debts, or flee. The bank faces the fantasy equivalent of a run, except its reserves technically belong to a creature capable of burning the institution to ash.
The party is hired because they can move between the dragon’s lair and the outside world without exposing the scheme immediately. The kobolds need the crown recovered and their borrowers calmed. Yet the dragon may prove harder to predict than anyone expects. It understands compound interest perfectly well. Its real outrage may be that the kobolds built a profitable institution with its treasure and never offered it a controlling share.
Possible Directions
- Retrieve the crown without collapsing the bank. The party can negotiate with the borrower, steal the collateral back, refinance the debt through another client, or discover that the crown has already changed hands. Every solution affects confidence in the kobolds’ operation and may create new claimants who expect repayment.
- Bring the dragon into the arrangement. If the party reveals the truth carefully, the crisis shifts from concealment to ownership. The dragon may demand equity, control over major loans, or personal oversight of debt collection, turning the kobolds’ secret bank into a frighteningly legitimate regional power.
