The Hook

Every spring, a mountain village sends livestock, silver, and crafted goods to a nearby dragon. The elders claim the tribute prevents another devastating attack, and old scorch marks across the valley seem to prove the bargain is necessary.

The dragon remembers things differently. It burned the valley decades ago while fighting something beneath it, never demanded payment, and has repeatedly tried to return the offerings. Someone intercepts every returned treasure before it reaches the village, profiting from keeping the “tribute” alive.

Possible Directions

The party can expose whoever controls the collection, negotiate directly with the dragon, or uncover who rewrote the original battle as an act of extortion. Ending the tribute could free the village from generations of fear—but it may also end the only regular arrangement keeping the dragon attentive to whatever still sleeps beneath the valley.

The Hook

Every home in the valley hangs a blue lantern above its door. While the flame burns, restless spirits cannot cross the threshold, and the custom has kept the villages safe for generations.

The lanterns do not burn oil. They consume memories of the dead.

First go songs, voices, and private stories. Then names become meaningless, graves lose their owners, and entire lives vanish from living memory. The spirits outside grow increasingly frantic—not because they want revenge, but because being remembered may be the only thing preventing them from fading entirely.

Possible Directions

The party can search for another ward, extinguish the lanterns and negotiate with the returning spirits, or preserve selected memories elsewhere. Any solution exposes the valley to a different danger. The question is no longer whether the lanterns work, but how much of the past the living are willing to sacrifice for safety.

The Hook

For generations, a village lived under a curse that prevented anyone from leaving after sunset. The party reached it only after discovering a forgotten breach in the ward that ordinary outsiders could not use. When the party finally destroys the ancient wardstone responsible, the grateful villagers celebrate their freedom.

By morning, caravans are already arriving—from people who have been waiting decades for the barrier to fall.

The “curse” also prevented outsiders from entering. Old creditors, displaced heirs, monster hunters, smugglers, and one furious noble house all possess legitimate claims connected to the village’s forgotten past. Some villagers want the wardstone restored immediately. Others see the sudden attention as their first chance at wealth, justice, or escape.

Possible Directions

The party could help negotiate which claims deserve recognition, rebuild a weaker version of the barrier, or uncover why the ward was created in the first place. The uncomfortable possibility remains that whoever imprisoned the village may also have been protecting it.
