A tense wilderness encounter for a forest trail, hunting ground, frontier road, or druid-haunted woodland where the party walks directly into a conflict already seconds from turning violent.

Category: Wild
Frame: Confrontation

The Situation

In a fern-choked clearing, three hunters have surrounded a massive stag with one antler broken and blood darkening its flank. Their spears are lowered, but nobody has struck.

The stag stands over a wounded young hunter pinned beneath a fallen branch. Every time one of the others moves closer, the animal stamps, snorts, and threatens to gore the trapped victim.

The hunters shout contradictory demands at the characters. Their leader insists the stag attacked without warning and must be killed immediately. Another begs the party not to provoke it until they can pull their companion free.

The stag is exhausted, terrified, and refusing to retreat.

What’s Really Happening

The hunters accidentally cornered the stag while pursuing it through dense undergrowth. The wounded hunter threw a spear first, grazing the animal. During the stag’s charge, a dead limb crashed down and trapped him.

The stag is not guarding prey. Its fawn is hidden in thick bracken directly behind the trapped hunter.

It will fight savagely if anyone advances toward the fawn, but otherwise wants only enough space to escape with it.

The hunters do not know the fawn is there.

Pressure

The trapped hunter is bleeding heavily and weakening. Meanwhile, the stag grows more frantic as shouting, movement, and the smell of blood intensify.

If nobody changes the situation, one of the hunters finally loses nerve and throws a spear. The stag charges, likely turning the standoff into a chaotic melee around the pinned victim.

Complication

Freeing the wounded hunter requires approaching the exact patch of ground the stag is defending.

Even if the characters recognize that the animal wants to flee rather than fight, simply backing away does not solve the immediate problem: the trapped hunter may not survive long without help.

Possible Resolutions

The characters can calm and redirect the stag, using food, animal handling, magic, or coordinated movement to open a safe route between the bracken and the trees. Once the fawn emerges, the stag retreats with it unless attacked.

They can create distance from the trapped hunter, cutting, lifting, or dragging the fallen branch from the opposite side while others distract the stag. Failure or sudden movement may provoke a charge.

They can side with the hunters and kill or drive off the stag. This quickly removes the immediate threat, but discovering the frightened fawn afterward may change how the hunters—and the party—view the victory.

They can also force everyone to withdraw temporarily, accepting greater risk to the wounded hunter in exchange for giving the stag enough quiet to leave on its own.

Common Questions

A drop-in arcane discovery encounter for an inn, manor, abandoned wizard’s house, or any building with a room that has been sealed for years.

Category: Arcane
Frame: Discovery

The Situation

Every reflective surface in one locked room has stopped showing the present.

Instead, each mirror shows the same room during a frantic magical experiment: candles burning blue, silver diagrams across the floor, and a terrified mage moving between them. No two mirrors show the same moment. In one, the mage smashes a silver hand mirror. In another, blood runs down their sleeve. In a third, they desperately point toward someone who cannot be seen.

The images are moving.

A caretaker, servant, or curious local has already broken one mirror. Since then, reflections have begun leaking into reality: old candle flames flicker above empty holders, furniture shifts to positions shown in the glass, and fresh silver scratches appear across the floor.

What’s Really Happening

The mirrors contain fragments of an unfinished arcane memory spell. Together they recorded the final minutes of an experiment meant to create a perfect magical duplicate of a person.

The experiment failed because its creator realized too late that the duplicate would replace rather than merely copy its subject.

The mirrors are replaying those final minutes—but backwards and out of order.

The shattered hand mirror was the experiment’s focus. Its missing silvered fragments now lie among the debris.

Pressure

The recorded experiment is rebuilding itself in the present.

As time passes, more details from the mirrors become real: diagrams complete themselves, blue flames ignite, and anyone standing where the original subject stood begins appearing inside the reflections.

If nothing interrupts the process, the spell completes and creates an arcane duplicate of that character. The duplicate immediately insists that it is the original and attempts to eliminate its rival.

Complication

Smashing mirrors accelerates the reconstruction.

Each broken mirror releases its stored fragment directly into the room. What looks like the obvious way to destroy the spell instead brings it closer to completion.

The characters can discover this by comparing the changes caused by the already-broken mirror with intact reflections.

Possible Resolutions

Reconstruct the sequence. By comparing wounds, candle lengths, damaged furniture, and the mage’s movements, the characters can determine the reflections’ true order. Covering the mirrors in that sequence causes the memory to unwind and dissipate safely.

Restore the focus. Gathering the visible silvered fragments and rebuilding the hand mirror gives the spell somewhere to collapse. The restored mirror permanently contains the unfinished duplicate, occasionally showing it staring outward.

Break the magic deliberately. Characters can destroy the remaining mirrors at once and confront the resulting duplicate before the spell stabilizes. Defeating it ends the reconstruction violently.

Let it complete. The party may deliberately allow the duplication and deal with two apparently identical individuals afterward. The magic provides no simple proof of which one deserves to remain.

Optional connection: Mirror Dungeon Echoes (d12) is not a perfect fit for this encounter, but I’m including it in case you find a useful echo, detail, or connection to borrow for your version at the table.
