The Dragon’s Gold
D&D 5e Plot Hook · Dragon Hoard · Economic Crisis · Systemic Consequence
The Hook
For generations, an ancient dragon’s hoard quietly removed a fortune in gold from circulation. Merchants cursed the lost wealth, but the scarcity helped keep the realm’s coin stable. Now the dragon is dead, its treasure divided among mercenaries, nobles, temples, and merchants—and thousands of hidden coins are flooding back into the economy.
Prices rise faster than wages. Debtors celebrate while lenders face ruin. Neighboring kingdoms begin refusing the currency, and rival factions buy treasure simply to lock it away again.
Possible Directions
The party may be hired to recover scattered portions of the hoard, protect those suddenly enriched by it, or help establish a new source of monetary stability. They can also investigate whether earlier rulers understood the dragon’s economic role—and whether someone deliberately protected the creature to keep the realm’s currency scarce. Every solution shifts who gains and who loses.
